Horizontal Boring Machine

A horizontal boring machine is a type of boring machine that uses a rotating tool to boring material by enlarging the hole that has been drilled with a single-point cutting tool, such as in boring a gun barrel or an engine cylinder. The horizontal boring machine can be controlled manually or by computer numerical control (CNC) system in the horizontal phase.

Nowadays, such machines are usually controlled by CNC systems, and the precision is controlled within a relatively small tolerance range. The boring method can be done in different directions based on different tracks installed on the axes.

Horizontal Phase of Arrangement

Like turning centers and milling machines, boring machines have vertical and horizontal designs. The horizontal boring machine is the most common machine in the machining process. It uses a rotating tool to boring the work piece by enlarging the hole that has been drilled by a single-point cutting tool, such as boring a barrel or engine cylinder under the control of a programmed control system. Nowadays, boring machines are usually controlled by an automatically programmed CNC system, and the precision can be controlled within a relatively small tolerance range.

Furthermore, the boring methods could be done on different directions that are based on the different moving tracks installed on the axes of the machine. Many milling machines and machining centers can perform boring processing. The purpose is to facilitate simple next step processing after complex milling tasks. The current drilling machines are also designed with boring function to meet the requirements of fast cycle time and work in a horizontal structure.

In addition, many boring machines now have other metal processing capabilities, not just boring functions. Therefore, on-site operators can complete multiple tasks on the single machine without having to move work pieces from one workstation to another, which wastes a lot of precious time. Many boring machines are designed with milling functions, because with additional functions, processing can be carried out more smoothly.

Vertical Phase of Arrangement

In addition to horizontal boring, there is also vertical boring. The vertical boring and milling machine is a milling-oriented machine tool with a vertical alignment structure. This type of machine tool is a highly developed and widely used machine tool. When the milling machine is equipped with auxiliary accessories, such as automatic tool changer (ATC), tool magazine, automatic pallet changer (APC) and rotary table, it can handle multiple milling tasks in one stop. Therefore, these functions are critical to the entire production line.

Vertical boring and milling machines are developed from conventional milling machines with boring capabilities. The purpose is to add this additional function to the milling machine to handle further finishing. This type of machine tool is progressing smoothly in the industry, and machining centers have begun to be widely used in various industries. Because the machining center has strong processing ability and agility, it has made extensive contributions to the industrial productions.

In the factory's production line, vertical type boring and milling machines are considered a must. The movable axis of the boring and milling method is the most important part of the boring and milling machine. They are used to perform machining tasks in different directions based on the different tracks installed on the axes of machine.

Regarding the axis issue, the number of axes depends on the needs of customers. There is no absolute optimal number, only the most suitable combination according to user requirements. Milling and boring covers a variety of operations, and the range is very wide, from single tiny parts to heavy gang milling tasks.

Similar to turning, milling and boring are the most widely adopted machining methods and provide precise tolerances. Because of its effectiveness in processing complex contour work pieces, the research and development of milling methods are widely welcomed in the industry, which is difficult to achieve by any conventional methodology. With the development of milling and boring technology, mechanical equipment has evolved into many varieties of processing methods. One of the most popular and widely used is the machining center. Many machining centers cover the boring function, making the entire machining process more convenient and efficient.
