Technically speaking, in the field of mechanics, the term motor and the term engine are usually the same thing. That is, both of them refer to a machine which is designed to convert a form of energy into the targeted mechanical energy. The category of motors varies, and there are many kinds of motors now. For instance, the heat engines is a kind of the internal combustion engine, which burns a specific types of fuel in order to create heat, and the heat is then used to do works. On the other hand, electric motors can convert electrical energy into mechanical motion; while pneumatic motors can use compressed air as the power source, and clockwork motors in wind-up watches use elastic energy as its power source. In the machine tool industry, when people are talking about motors, many of them are referring to some other power accessories in the axis motion and automation supportive equipment, such as linear motors, brushless motor, and some other supportive equipment power source that is used to drive machineries.

Type of Motors

Linear motors and electric motors

For the most commonly known and used motors in the precision machinery that gives accurate outputs to the end products, linear motors, servo motors, and electric motors are the three primary terms that people use while talking about the power source of the working machinery. Linear motors are the device that can produce linear motion with no need of transmission systems. Conventional transmission system includes many relevant components, such as rack & pinion, ball-and-lead screws, cams, etc. In the case of rotary motors, the above mentioned components are needed to compose a rotary motor. The brushless DC linear motor is designed with a slotted stator with magnetic teeth and a moving actuator. This is the basis of the machine.
 
In fact, the actuator is often with permanent magnets and coil windings. In order to gain the linear motion, the motor controller intrigues the coil windings in the actuator, leading an activation of the magnetic fields thereby achieving the linear actions. Besides the linear motor, here we will also introduce another one, the BLDC motor, giving a comprehensive picture of the motor inventory. BLDC motor is the abbreviation of brushless DC electric motor, which is also known as electronically commutated motor (abbreviated as ECM or EC motor), and also called synchronous DC motors. The BLDC motor is a synchronous motor which is driven by direct current electricity through an inverter that emits an alternating current electric current to motivate each phase of the motor through a closed loop controller. The controller features are rather important these days because now most of the manufacturing are inevitably being managed in automatic model, rendering better and greater productivity, hence the controller issue becomes more and more critical to the final results. The controller issue

For most CNC and automatic machineries, the controller offers pulses of current to the motor windings that manage the torque and speed of the motor device. Generally speaking, the construction of the brushless motor system is basically identical or even similar to a permanent magnet synchronous motor, abbreviated as PMSM, while the former can be recognized as a switched reluctance motor or an induction motor but not synchronous. Only with an appropriate controller onto the working machinery, can onsite operators achieve productive working shifts and cooperate with their colleagues because controlling is integrated into the working schedules in the modern days.

 

BLDC advantages

Furthermore, the issue of ratio of power to weight is also critical when one is speaking of the advantages of the brushless motors compared with the brushed motors, the former are designed with higher power to weight ratio, higher speed, better electronic control, and lower maintenance costs. As a result, based on these advantages, the brushless direct current motors are widely applied to a lot of scientific applications. Both linear motor and BLDC motors are widely applied in the machine tool sectors as well as the metalworking and automation sectors. The future development of these products is also blooming in the market. Today, in both automation and 3C consumable electric sectors, manufacturers that need to process machining tasks in the 21st century tend to purchase machining centers with robotic arm accessories for a wider application.

 

Trendy industry?

Even if the machine tools are the most fundamental capital goods for manufacturers and play the critical role that determines the final output of the end products, robotic arm or other automation equipment become the key point of the quality of the manufacturers’ final end products. As a result, the inventory of BLDC motors and machine tools vary from time to time. Accordingly, now after the invention of the machining centers and the programmed controlling system (CNC, computer numerical control), the standards of machining become more and more rigid compared with the standards before. Besides the CNC machining centers, there are also CNC turning centers, CNC milling machines, CNC tapping and milling centers, CNC drilling and milling centers, and other customized machinery models and these models are all capable of the integration of automation design. So now manufacturers are not just competing with each other on their product quality, but also on how automatic their working models are.
