Metal Slitting Machines

The processing of sheet metals from the metal coil requests metal slitting machines as part of the production lines. In the metal forming sector, automatic steel coil slitting lines are widely applied in all kinds of industries for the best convenience of operators due to its supportive nature. By structure, coil slitting is much like roll slitting, which is a shearing operation that cuts a large roll of materials into narrower rolls for users. Among the inventory, there are two types of slitting, first is log slitting and another is the rewind slitting. Speaking of the log slitting case, the roll of material is treated as a whole part and one or more slices are taken from it without an unrolling procedure. Regarding the rewind slitting case, the web is unwound and run through the machine, passing through knives or lasers, and before being rewound on one or more shafts to form the narrower rolls. In fact, the multiple narrower strips of material may be known as the multiple or pancakes if their diameter is much more than their width.

Type of Slitting Lines

For sheet metals, the processing of sheet metal materials from the metal coil requests metal slitting machines as part of the production lines.

Rewind and slitting

Regarding the rewind slitting mechanism, the web is unwound and run through the equipment, passing through knives or lasers, and before being rewound on one or more shafts to form the narrower rolls. As a matter of fact, the multiple narrower strips of material may be entitled as the multiple or pancakes if their diameter is much wider than their width. For the slitting of materials of hard substances, such as sheet metal materials, the utilized blades cannot be the cutting tools. Rather, a modified form of shearing is utilized as the tools.

In such case, two cylindrical rolls with matching ribs and grooves are applied to cut a large roll into multiple narrower rolls, and this consecutive production process is economic and most importantly, precise in a great extent. This is usually more precise than other cutting processes people have. Nevertheless, the occurrence of rough edges known as burrs are commonplace on the slit edges and this issue shall also be taken care of by manufacturers. Moreover, the geometry of these rolls is determined by specific tolerances in addition to the type of material and work piece thickness.

Soft and hard materials

For the slitting of soft materials, there are several methods which are available for soft coils such as plastic films, textiles, adhesive tapes, and paper. Razor blades, straight, or circular blades are widely adopted, and some blades cut through the material while others crush the material against a hard roll. Those are more similar to knives in an extent of consideration. Besides, the cutting blades can be set to a desired width, and some machines have many blades and can produce many output rolls at once, so the slit material is rewound on paper, plastic, or metal cores on the exit side of the machine units.

Slitting width

The above mentioned process, though looks unfamiliar, is adopted due to its low cost and high precision for mass production business model, and some machines have a program that monitors the blades and sharpens the blades in order to maintain the quality and precision of the cut. Based on the industry and the product that is being slit, these machines normally can operate between 10 m per minute and 5000 m per minute, depending on the materials and other issues.

The slitting machines can also incorporate extensive automation to precisely control material tension, automatically position the slitting knives, and automatically align the cores on which the material is wound and to reduce manual handling of the metal rolls. Even in the mid of 20th century, the urge of automation in industry was really hot for business owners based on various demands. This trend began in the western world since then the employee cost in both Europe and the US were already high enough for employers so that the circumstances help the acceleration of the development of the automation technology, making NC and CNC programming control systems for managers of the manufacturing plants to handle. At the same time, in the rest of the world, industrial insiders had not yet realized the urge to go with the trend, yet this did not hinder their progression in this path as many of the Eastern exporters learn how to cope with their Western customers’ needs by offering them the corresponding automation equipment assisting customers deal with the cost down policy, which helped manufacturers in Taiwan, Japan, China, and other places to learn about the automation and smart control.

Integration into production lines

Sheet metal, once uncoiled and slit, can be processed and become very useful products for a wide variety of practical applications. Depending on the thickness and materials, sheet metals can be used to form many different kind of items. As a result, the correlation between forming machines and automation systems are getting more and more intimate nowadays. On the other hand, servo presses and mechanical presses are also widely applied as well as the hydraulic presses and each of them represents different mechanical advantages. In addition to the metal working industry, with the ongoing development towards light-weight parts for sports, aerospace, and automotive appliances and many other industries, servo hydraulic and hydraulic presses have become a crucial tool for the thermoplastic industries in the plastics and rubber industries for users all over the world.
